Traditional Watercolor Florals
About the Technique
Using only Artists quality Watercolour Paper and Artists Quality Pigments. Normally framed with one or more mats under glass. No other substances are used and the white paper is left where needed. No white pigments are added. The rest is done with different acquired techniques and effect learned over time.
Apricot Nectar
A forty minute drive from Comox to Paradise Meadows, west of Mount Washington Ski Resot, brings you to hidden treasures of marsh, ground covers, birds and trees of all ages. Some trees are disfigured by age, wind and the elements while others are festooned with moss. In the fall there are wild blueberries and a carpet of pink and orange leaves - Paradise indeed!
Elsie’s Gift
Elsie came into my life first as a student and then as a friend and later as a neighbour. We also exchanged garden treasures and she gave me a cutting of this Rhododendron. It seemed to struggle for several years and then took off! I planned to paint it but tragically Elsie passed away after a long battle with cancer. This now hangs in my bedroom and is much admired.
Flower Power
To understand the use of negative paintings, here is blossom I put a light wash on paper. When dry, use a slightly darker shade of the same mix and paint around the first row of petals not over them. I let the paint dry and follow again with a darker shade for row three. I kept going until the edge of the paper comes and watch your flower bloom!

Description
Canna Lillies
Everyone has colors they prefer to decorate their homes and to wear. My favourite colors are yellow, gold and red complimented by shades of green. These canna lillies provided all of those colours in addition to interesting shapes and twists of leaves. This was both a challenge and a joy to paint.
Cascade
Christmas Cheer
The color red with watercolor paint often dries rather dull. I found that using a lightly transparent yellow first and letting it dry, will help to reds to stay vibrant.

Orchids
I do love all the shapes, sizes and colours of orchids. Over time, I gathered quite a collection of reference material before the day came when I started on this painting. I began with a few dominant flowers and then as if they were actually growing before me, tucked in some leaves and buds into the background.
